There are many imitators, but this is the one true, traditional beer garden in New York. Its beer selection isn't huge, and mainly skews to imports, naturally, but the atmosphere is one of a kind.
While not exactly a mecca like the faux beer gardens people are flocking to, this one is the real deal, and serves German cuisine and beer to boot.
Despite its fratty clientele, they serve good beer outdoors in a shady, communal environment. Can't say that about any of the fake "beer gardens" PR flacks have tried to convince us exist this summer.
