The name Wakodahatchee is derived from the Seminole Indian language and means “created waters”. The area is home to a variety of birds, turtles, frogs, alligators, and more.
Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee Refuge is the last northernmost portion of the unique Everglades. The Refuge is home to the American alligator and the critically endangered Everglade snail kite.
The refuge was established in 1931 to provide wintering habitat for migratory birds. It is one of the oldest refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System.
