Europe’s largest brick building was given classical flair by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The station went off-line in 1983. In 2010 plans were approved for redevelopment into offices and homes.
In 1938 Harringay Arena was the venue for the first boxing match to be televised live, the full 15 rounds between Len Harvey v Jock McAvoy were broadcast.
This grand Tudor palace was built by Henry VIII’s Lord Chancellor Cardinal Wolsey, but passed to the king in 1529. His 4th queen Catherine Howard is said to haunt the gallery outside the chapel.
The London home of the Duke of Northumberland is built on the site of a medieval nunnery. There in 1547 the coffin containing Henry VIII, en route to Windsor, exploded due to build up of gasses!
This Palladian villa was built in the 1720s for the Countess of Suffolk, a mistress of George II. Here she would entertain the poet Alexander Pope and the satirist Jonathan Swift.
No dogs are allowed in this 17th century aristocratic home, so if you see one it will be the ghost of the Duchess of Lauderdale’s dog. She herself was once a famously beautiful and ambitious resident.
Since the reign of Henry VIII visitors have come to the White Tower, the central keep of the Tower of London, to admire the weapons and armour displayed here by the Royal Armouries.
Built to commemorate the Great Fire of 1666, the height of the Monument is the same as its distance from the bakery on Pudding Lane where the fire started.
This is one of London’s ‘ghost’ stations, closed since 1994. During the Blitz it housed precious treasures from the British Museum. These days it’s in regular demand as a film set.
